Depression and Mental HealthUsing Pharmacogenomics to Inform Depression Treatment - The purpose of this presentation is to teach the audience how to utilize pharmacogenomics data to better inform treatment decisions in mental health, with specific examples for major depressive disorder. The beginning of the presentation focuses on basic background information, including defining pharmacogenomics, reviewing general genetics, and discussing how mutations in DNA can translate to changes in medication processing. The next portion of the presentation highlights specific genes that are significant in processing psychotropic medications and how a patient’s pharmacogenomic results leads to different clinical considerations with these medications. These include dosing considerations, class-effects, risk for side-effects, and potential issues with efficacy. A patient case is discussed to exemplify how these pieces of information come together in creating a medication treatment plan. The last part of the presentation is focused on evidence of the clinical utility of pharmacogenomics in treatment outcomes in major depression, with a highlight on a recent study published by the VA in JAMA. This presentation will be unbranded.
Joy is Possible - Implementing the Institute of Health (IHI) Joy In Work framework can create a positive experience for our providers and patients. Implementation of this work improves provider engagement, patient experience, outcomes, safety, organizational effectiveness, and productivity. Joy is possible will review the current evidence-based research and discuss the Joy in Work framework. Given the current climate of provider burnout and staffing shortages, this presentation will provide practical solutions and how to implement them with your team in various settings. Potential outcomes that address these challenges include increasing provider engagement and retention, decreasing burnout, and improving patient outcomes.
Learning Objectives
"Using Pharmacogenomics to Inform Depression Treatment": Equip healthcare providers with the knowledge and skills to interpret and apply pharmacogenomic data in the treatment of major depressive disorder, focusing on understanding gene-drug interactions, personalized medication dosing, and the clinical utility of genetic testing to enhance treatment efficacy and reduce adverse effects.
"Joy is Possible": Educate healthcare leaders on implementing the Institute of Health's Joy In Work framework to improve provider engagement, enhance patient experiences, and address burnout and staffing challenges effectively within healthcare settings.
Learning Outcome Evaluation: Participants will state one thing they learned from the program and how they will implement it into their practice.
Speakers
Tiffany Budzinski, FNP is a board-certified family nurse practitioner with over ten years of experience in retail health. Born and raised in Chicago, IL., Budzinski earned her BSN from University of Illinois in Chicago and MSN from Saint Xavier University. She began her nursing career in the Cardiac Surgical ICU prior to becoming a family nurse practitioner. Currently, she leads a large team of APNs and has done so for the last five years. Through her leadership experience she brings a unique perspective on how to successfully engage your team by leading evidence-based initiatives surrounding Joy in Work. In addition to her passion for engagement, Budzinski has been published in Contemporary Clinic, was a featured presenter at the AANP National Conference, and a professor at Chamberlain College of Nursing. Budzinski is committed to empowering health care colleagues through professional development and engagement.
Samantha Socco is currently employed as a Medical Science Liaison (MSL) with a pharmacogenomics testing company, where she travels the Midwest to discuss the use of pharmacogenomic testing in mental health. She was born and raised on the Southside of Chicago and she received her BS in Biochemistry and PharmD at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Prior to working as an MSL, Sam completed her first year of clinical pharmacy residency at UIC followed by a second year of residency in Pharmacogenomics, splitting time between both UIC and NorthShore University HealthSystem (now known as Endeavor Health). Sam is very passionate about psychiatric conditions/medications and PGx and enjoys engaging with providers to consult on specific patients struggling with various mental health conditions.
