Overview

Pharmacology

Long acting injectables (LAIs) for substance use disorders (SUDs) represent a promising approach to treatment that offers several advantages over traditional oral or sublingual formulations. These injectables typically provide sustained release of medication over an extended period, ranging from weeks to months, which can improve stability in treatment, and reduce the risk of recurrence of substance use and overdose. In this presentation we will review the safety and efficacy of the use of long acting injectables (LAIs) for the treatment of substance use disorders, such as Opiate Use Disorder (OUD) and Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD).  We will discuss the various clinical indications, available formulations, MOA, side effects, contraindications, storage, and follow-up.

Learning Objectives

  • Understanding Long-Acting Injectable Medications for SUD: Equip healthcare providers with comprehensive knowledge of the available long-acting injectable (LAI) formulations for treating substance use disorders (SUD), including their safety, efficacy, and clinical indications.

  • Application of LAIs in Clinical Practice: Develop skills in administering and managing patients on long-acting injectables such as Buprenorphine (Sublocade and Brixadi) and Naltrexone (Vivitrol), focusing on correct dosing, storage requirements, and follow-up protocols to optimize patient outcomes.

  • Addressing Barriers and Enhancing Patient Compliance: Train healthcare providers to effectively address the barriers to accessing LAI treatments for SUD, including understanding regulatory requirements and utilizing provider resources to enhance patient compliance and support.

Learning Outcome Evaluation: Participants will state one thing they learned from the program and how they will implement it into their practice.
