In critical airway management scenarios, the ability to quickly and effectively manage airway instrumentation and reverse muscle relaxants is paramount. While succinylcholine is a widely used muscle relaxant for facilitating intubation by inducing vocal cord relaxation, there are instances where its administration is contraindicated. This abstract aims to delve into the necessity for alternative muscle relaxants in specific patient populations and the utilization of sugammadex as a reversal agent in critical airway situations. By exploring the pharmacological options available to advanced practice providers, this abstract highlights the importance of understanding and implementing alternative strategies to ensure optimal patient outcomes in challenging airway scenarios. By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to apply pharmacological knowledge to manage critical airway scenarios.

Learning Objectives

  • Understanding Pharmacological Agents for Airway Management: Gain a comprehensive understanding of key pharmacological agents used in airway management, including Propofol, Etomidate, Ketamine, and various neuromuscular blockers, focusing on their mechanisms of action, indications, and pharmacokinetics.

  • Safe Application of Sedatives and Muscle Relaxants: Learn to apply sedatives and neuromuscular blocking agents safely in clinical scenarios, taking into account patient-specific factors such as health status and potential drug interactions, to ensure effective and safe intubation practices.

  • Decision-Making in Airway Management: Develop decision-making skills for managing difficult airways, integrating both pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies, and utilizing decision-making pathways for different patient demographics, including adults and children.

Learning Outcome Evaluation: Participants will state one thing they learned from the program and how they will implement it into their practice.
