Acute Kidney Injury: Protecting the Beans - Acute kidney injury (AKI) effects up to 60% of critically ill patients and is associated with 31% mortality. Social determinants of health contribute to AKI risks. Many patients will develop AKI recurrence, cardiovascular complications and chronic kidney disease. Early detection and strategies to minimize complications in acutely ill patients is warranted and AKI phenotypes and novel biomarkers will be discussed. Overall this presentation aims to offer a practical approach to managing patients with AKI. One of the aspects of the talk will focus on fluid resuscitation and de-escalation of IV fluids. Case study format will be used to discuss strategies to minimize toxicities associated with diagnostics, prescribing antimicrobial agents and other pharmacologic therapies. Managing common AKI complications will be reviewed. Role of various hemodialysis modalities in acutely ill will be explored.

Geriatric trauma patients: They are not just “older adults” - Caring for a geriatric trauma patient can be very challenging and there are multiple questions that must be answered. How do you define geriatric? What physiologic differences does a geriatric trauma patient have that affects their care and recovery? How do the concepts of frailty and futility affect the care of a geriatric trauma patient? How do comorbidities affect the geriatric trauma patient? What about polypharmacy and the geriatric trauma patient? How do you care for the delirious geriatric trauma patient? What specific protocols have been defined in the literature regarding best practice when caring for a geriatric trauma patient? Are there trauma center that specialize in geriatric trauma care? Just a few of the many questions affecting how geriatric patients are cared for when they experience a traumatic injury. This presentation will attempt to provide some answers, examine current geriatric trauma literature and review pertinent geriatric case studies. In addition, participants will be provided with time to ask questions as well as share their experiences in caring for the geriatric trauma patient.

Learning Objectives

Acute Kidney Injury: Protecting the Beans

  1. Early Detection and Intervention: Understand the importance of early detection and intervention in acute kidney injury (AKI), including the use of novel biomarkers and AKI phenotypes to identify at-risk patients promptly.

  2. Management Strategies: Learn about effective strategies for fluid resuscitation and the appropriate de-escalation of IV fluids in the management of AKI, utilizing case studies to illustrate how to minimize toxicities from diagnostics and pharmacologic therapies.

Geriatric Trauma Patients: They are not just “older adults”

  1. Physiological and Clinical Considerations: Recognize the unique physiological differences and the impacts of frailty and futility in geriatric trauma patients, and how these factors influence care and recovery strategies.

  2. Best Practices and Protocols: Review current literature and case studies to understand best practices and specialized protocols for managing geriatric trauma, including managing comorbidities, polypharmacy, and delirium in these patients.

Learning Outcome Evaluation: Participants will state one thing they learned from the program and how they will implement it into their practice.
