The stigma of mental illness is harsh in and of itself, however, it is thought that those with borderline personality disorder suffer this stigma at increased degrees, not only by society, but by healthcare professionals as well.  Borderline personality disorder is extremely complicated, inundated with not only recurrent suicidality, but also a multitude of somatic symptoms that can make it difficult for healthcare providers to manage.  Clinicians often feel unprepared for the severity of these patients’ suffering and lack of resources to help them.  However, those with borderline personality disorder utilize the healthcare system at markedly increased rates, seeing their primary care provider at four times the rate of the usual patient.  Primary care providers must be prepared with the knowledge to not only diagnose a patient with borderline personality disorder, but also have the confidence to care for them and the complexity of their disorder. This presentation will give providers information that will give them the confidence to diagnose, treat, and support those with borderline personality disorder.

Learning Objectives

  • Understanding and Diagnosing Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD): Equip primary care providers with the necessary knowledge and tools to accurately diagnose borderline personality disorder, understanding the complex interplay of recurrent suicidality and somatic symptoms that characterize the disorder.

  • Effective Management and Support Strategies: Enhance the confidence and competence of healthcare professionals in managing and supporting patients with borderline personality disorder, focusing on effective communication, treatment strategies, and resource utilization to improve patient outcomes and reduce stigma.

Learning Outcome Evaluation: Participants will state one thing they learned from the program and how they will implement it into their practice.
